2026 tax year · income, sales & property tax

Where you live changes what you keep.

A side-by-side estimate of state income tax, sales tax and property tax for any set of states — built for executives, business owners and snowbirds weighing a move, a second home, or a change of domicile.

Estimates use 2026 state brackets, standard deductions and personal exemptions, 2026 combined state + average local sales tax rates, and the latest effective property tax rates on owner-occupied homes. Federal tax is the same wherever you live and is left out on purpose.

The eight states with no income tax

No income tax rarely means no tax. These states lean harder on sales and property taxes — and the totals below, at your numbers, show how much of the savings survives.

Method

How the estimates are built

Income taxYour taxable income less the state's standard deduction and personal exemption (or plus its exemption credit), run through the 2026 brackets for your filing status. Local income taxes (New York City, Maryland counties, Ohio municipalities, Pennsylvania boroughs, and others) are not included. Retirement-income exclusions, pension exemptions and Social Security rules vary by state and are noted in each profile but not applied to the estimate.
Sales taxAnnual taxable spending × the 2026 combined state and population-weighted average local rate. Grocery, prescription and clothing exemptions differ by state; enter only spending you expect to be taxed.
Property taxHome value × the state's effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing (taxes paid ÷ home value, statewide median). Local rates, homestead exemptions and assessment caps such as Florida's Save Our Homes or California's Proposition 13 can move the real number substantially.
